As mentioned in my previous posts, I'm breaking things and un-breaking them as I fix the site. I have finally broken something that merits being mentioned on The Funk. Most of the song links are broken right now. And that's because I am currently re-tagging and re-organizing the tracks into proper albums for distribution. Up until now, most of the mp3's were copies from the old geocities site, so most of them had tags with links to the geocities website, which does not exist anymore.
Everything should be back up and working again within the new few days. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Continuing with updates and overall site maintenance. Been finding and fixing broken links, redirecting links to old files and trying to recover as much of the lost data as possible. What a nasty crash that was but the site is definitely a lot more stable now than it was before.
I've also started looking at the search engine data again. Without actually pulling out a calculator I'm just going to use general numbers but, our peak years so far were 2005 and 2006, where we averaged about 10,000 "unique" visitors a month. In 2004 we were only averaging a few hundred, and somehow we managed to push that to about 10,000 a month and that's pretty crazy I think. I'm going to guess that it has a lot to do with all the movies we uploaded plus everyone sharing the links to the movies on more popular sites and message boards. Then from 2007~2009 it's been at a stable 2000~3000 a month. Not bad considering we hardly ever updated during that period. I'm guessing a large portion of that might be spam bots though..or maybe even all of it..haha.
What baffles me is that even after the site crashed and when I scrambled to re-upload all the data, the following month the page visitor count jumped back up to over 2000. The month of the crash, June 2009, the page views registered at only 400. So that's why I'm guessing it's just spam bots, plus a bunch of these other sites linking to our songs.
One of the top search terms this month is "ride that dog". If you look it up on google in quotes, you'll see the RIA site on page 1 (as of the time of this posting). Good stuff.
Most of the stuff for the main site is done now, but I'm still working on the About section and the Links section. Managed to get the Eye of Mordica data back, so I'm working on cleaning up that section too. As well as just continuing to recover lost data and also setting up the new message board.
Lately I've been using whatever time I can spare in between my job search and studying to continue with the updates for this site. NARC is finally up. After I'm not sure how many years since its release. Sorry about that BurpingCat! It seems like it was muted on YouTube, so the full version can be streamed off this site now and downloaded, woo!
Other than that, been working on a lot of other parts of the site, nothing major yet, but if you look around the site you should see some changes here and there.
Until next time, going to continue tackling the stuff I've been wanting to do for a long time, while I still have a bit of freedom on my hands.
Alright, so I've finished with the major stuff that I've wanted to update. The site still needs new logos, icons, and updates to different pages on the site, like the Contact and About sections. I'll be working on that in the coming weeks hopefully. I'll be adding NARC to the movie section finally as well.
I need to start looking for work again too, so, in-between job applications, and I'm hoping interviews, I'll be continuing to update.
So just consider everything in beta now, because a lot of the new stuff I've wanted to add has been implemented. Some maintenance still needs to be done but hopefully I'll be done soon.
Still updating the site. Doing a lot of stuff on the backend, no pun intended. Working on the new board, updating the music, movies, and pretty much everything really. Fixing broken links, deleting duplicate files, updating the e-mail addresses.
I've added a nifty feature: http://search.riafunk.com <-- go here and you can pretty much search the entire RIA site, not just this blog. I was playing with it earlier and it's cool to see what crazy results come out and old Funk entries that have been completely forgotten about. Posts from the old message board show up too.
Still got a lot left on my to-do list. Will be done soon for real this time though. It's taken years but I finally have found the time to organize everything the way I originally intended to a few years back.
Going to keep updating now, just wanted to post and wish all of RIA a Happy New Year!
The Geocities RIA site will be going down in a couple of days. I've backed up all the files I could recover from it, and I'm hoping I'll have some time tomorrow to make one last check. I feel like it should be more ceremonial, seeing how influential the Geocities site was, but, I guess when it comes down to it, data is just data. I'm going to miss the old File Manager, even though I haven't actually used it in almost 10 years.
By the time I get around to it, it'll be passed midnight on the 26th out here in Japan, but, if they are going by U.S. timezones, that'll give me a few hours to just look everything over one last time.
It was a good site though, even though the ads were annoying, there was just a charm in making multiple Geocities accounts just to scrounge the lousy 15 mb or something that they would allow for us. Back then 15 mb was a big deal, now we have like, 300 GB or unlimited storage space or something. I forget. But, even though we have all that space, nobody has updated, and well, neither have I, but that's because my life has just been so crazy since I graduated college.
Thank goodness for backups though, and being able to upload all that stuff here. It was pretty scary recently when I thought I had lost everything, but, thankfully I managed to recover most of it. None of this stuff is physical, its all just data on harddisks, but, losing it is like, losing a part of who I am. It's like memories you can't get back.
Backups. Backups. Backups. And poor Geocities site, but, it needs to go down with honor, so I'm not going to make fun of it now. It served me well and was fun to ghetto-update in highschool, and helped us pimp our $5 or $10 cds, I forget how much they cost. Good times.
Looking for a job and studying right now. Got a part time job but need something to keep me full time.
Still need time to update this site, but I'm thinking of just focusing on The Music to kick things off. The RIA Music project completely stalled as did Climbing Arc Ep 2 and NVMM + NVSE. Problem mainly being the challenges that come with living in a new country that required all of my attention. Still dealing with it now but it's settling down little by little. Thus, allowing me time to finally update again.
I finally got around to updating. I always sit on the main page and say to myself "I need to update" but then I realize there is so much I need to update with that I just say, "I don't have time to write all that" and put it off.
Recently this entire site was deleted, as some of you may have heard from my bantering on Facebook and AIM. Facebook by the way has sucked away all my internet time that I could have been using to update this site.
The site is back up now, I managed to recover about 80% of everything, but the Art section is still down. I managed to recover all the most important stuff, so that's what's important. I still have all the artwork backed up and uploaded on the server, just haven't had time to set up the art gallery software.
I took that as a message from the Ancients, that, I must continue to update once again.
Speaking of sites being shut down, Geocities is shutting down on October 26 2009. Yes that's right. Geocities is finally disappearing. I think they finally realized that offering only 15 mb of webspace and 4 mb of bandwidth per hour is a pretty retarded strategy in the year 2009. That means that our song "HTTPWWWDOTGEOCITIESDOTCOMSLASHRIAFUNK " will no longer reference an actual site because Geocities will be gone.
Until my next update, here is a message that Sorpaculips asked me to tell everyone after last year's Olympics in Beijing, where Sorpaculips challenged Yao Ming to a one-on-one basketball match:
"I slam dunked Yao Ming."
The game ended after 1 point because every time Sorpaculips scores a slam dunk, lightning bolts shoot from out of his brain, and every score he makes is a slam dunk. So this time, everyone including Yao Ming and excluding Mandangar, Sorpaculips's son, were stricken with 10th degree burns from the subsequent lightning bolts that came out of Sorpaculips's brain when he scored the slam dunk.
And I think that in Sorpaculips's message, he's referring to what happened after he scored the slam dunk. As Yao Ming lay severely burned and squirming on the floor, cursing in Chinese-American English, Sorpaculips picked him up and slam dunked him. After he slam dunked him, more lightning bolts came out of his brain.
My new site is up: Thought Diary The first comic is already up and running. If you're gonna bookmark the site, bookmark the cover page for it will change from time to time. If DJ Hadoken lets me I'll update this site to tell you of the latest comic. Enjoy and feel free to leave a comment!
Hi everyone and thanks Maggie for updating the site. Someone's got to do it once in awhile. I know it doesn't seem like much has been going on lately and that's only partly true. The boards are usually quite active when this main page is quiet so always remember to check the boards to know what's going on. I said it was only partly true that nothing has been going on because I've been doing a lot of behind the scenes work on this site and for RIA. Expect a big update in the coming months where I'll lay out a slightly new direction I want to take as RIA. I can't give a specific timeframe since I also just graduated college and am looking for work before my student loans come knocking at my door to devour me.
Honestly, I don't even want to do this post. This will be the fifth update in a row for me and I don't even like the idea of birthdays anyway. However, I like the idea of Javi. So, the slew of October/November birthdays ends (unless I'm missing someone, and I very well could be). If I missed your birthday, let me know and I'll be happy to make some kind of celebratory video to make up for it. Anyway...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAVI!
Its too bad your birthday didn't fall on Thanksgiving this year. Then you could celebrate with pumpkin pie AND cake.
Yes, there is another birthday. and i'm a day late posting it because i was busy shopping and stabbing myself in the finger with a pocket knife during an impulsive craft project. i think there is only like one more birthday before the slew of posts can end. and you should all know i only continue to do this because i can only imaging how repetitive and stupid you all probably think it is. and also because i love david.
